I contend that this collective international bias minimizes the usefulness of global TC research in light of global change forecasts, which predict increased frequency of intense TCs. Moreover, paleoecological studies indicate ecosystem resilience following a TC is greatly increased within habitats that experienced a prior history of frequent TCs. When these retrospective and future visions are connected, science-based analysis of the influences of climate change on TC disturbance argues for an increase in contemporary research on TCs of developing island nations in the western Pacific where TCs are already relatively frequent. Otherwise the current research trajectory may further widen the disconnect between best available science and future management decisions.

Revisiting the maximum intensity of recurving tropical cyclones

Previous studies have indicated that recurving western North Pacific tropical cyclones, initially westward moving tropical cyclones that turn toward the east, often reach their maximum intensity close to the time of recurvature. Those results have often been cited in the literature and sometimes inferred to be valid in other tropical cyclone basins. This study revisits this topic in the western...

What Percentage of Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclones Form within the Monsoon Trough?

It is frequently stated that 70%–80% of western North Pacific tropical cyclones form ‘‘within the monsoon trough,’’ but without an objective definition of the term. Several definitions are tested here. When the monsoon trough (MT) is defined as the contiguous region where long-term (1988–2010) mean July– November 850-hPa relative vorticity is positive, 73% of all July–November tropical cyclones...

Clustering of eastern North Pacific tropical cyclone tracks: ENSO and MJO effects

A probabilistic clustering technique is used to describe tropical cyclone tracks in the eastern North Pacific, based on their shape and location. The best-track dataset is decomposed in terms of three clusters; these clusters are analyzed in terms of genesis location, trajectory, landfall, intensity, seasonality, and their relationships with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Madden-Ju...

A BOUNDARY-FITTED SHALLOW WATER MODEL OF SIMULATE TIDE AND SURGE FOR THE HEAD BAY OF BENGAL – APPLICATION TO CYCLONE SIDR (2007) AND AILA (2009)

Severe Tropical Cyclones associated with surges frequently hits the coastal region of Bangladesh. For a reliable hydrodynamic model to simulate the severity of such cyclones, it is necessary to incorporate the meteorological and hydrological inputs properly. In order to incorporate the coastlines and the island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme a very fine grid resolution along the co...

Global warming shifts Pacific tropical cyclone location

[1] A global high‐resolution (∼40 km) atmospheric general circulation model (ECHAM5 T319) is used to investigate the change of tropical cyclone frequency in the North Pacific under global warming. A time slice method is used in which sea surface temperature fields derived from a lower‐ resolution coupled model run under the 20C3M (in which historical greenhouse gases in 20th century were prescr...
